Hi Mr. Gray,

Love your blog. I am Elizabeth Strickland's mother. We met briefly after she played the Barber Nocturne at the Focus on Artistry part of PPI summer festival last week.

Right before the Van Cliburn, I had a birthday and my husband gave me a new computer with a huge 25 inch screen and I streamed LIVE a lot of the Van Cliburn performances and rehearsals. I especially loved the rehearsals of the finalists and the orchestra conductor alone (which were NOT archived by the way - so that was a real treat), and the ones with the finalists rehearsing with orchestra. All very close up and LIVE while I sat riveted in my office getting NO work done, I assure you.

Next year I will be sure to do the same thing - it was amazing entertainment and just so memorable to watch it all live.

Thanks,

Kristi

I think she played well. Although her nervousness became apparent sometimes. I have to say that it was a good performance. A little memory slips here and there, but I don't know if that will cost her the next round.
Beus should be interesting to say the least.

That is a fantastically talented and exciting lineup! We get nothing like that in Los Angeles, it seems programmers here think the recital is dead. Yes, you can find individual recitals here and there, mostly through smaller presenters, or more often as part of a mixed chamber program. The LA Phil's ever-shrinking recital series seems to present the same musty names year in, year out.

I think Fleischer's dilemma arises from the historical accident (or advancement) that the United States government has no titular head similar to the Queen of England or the President of France. Much as I personally dislike nearly everything our current President says or does,I think Fleischer ultimately chose the proper path and his Washington Post op-ed was exceptionally well written. I hope everyone continued to the paragraph on the second page--his comment about playing well for his age as a young man and then as a "senior citizen" was priceless!

Harold,

I love your blog! Also enjoyed finding the link to Jeremy Denk's postings. He is such a wit -- especially enjoyed his challenge to a poetry slam down versus Stephen Hough.

Is poetry next for you?
